Scientific activity

The Department's researchers conduct studies related mainly to the bioeconomy, the circular economy, the production of bio-products and bio-preparations, as well as to sustainable waste management.
Research topics are related mainly to:

  • biological waste utilization, waste management and recycling
  • microbiological processes in the environment and food production
  • obtaining feed biocomponents
  • combined biological and chemical processes for the production of energy and valuable products from industrial waste biomass
  • unconventional yeast strains in biotechnological processes,
  • the biological activity of compounds of plant origin,
  • biopreparations (based on microorganisms, their metabolites and plant extracts) with pro-ecological and/or pro-health activity, for industrial, agricultural and environmental use – e.g. ecological preparations for animals, preparations for odor removal, biostimulants, biopesticides
  • biodeterioration of technical materials (including cultural heritage objects) and methods of protection,
  • antimicrobial activity and functional properties of modified building materials, textiles and installation materials
  • monitoring bioaerosols in the environment, industry and workplace, using modern IT systems, air purification and disinfection methods
  • biofilms in cold and hot water systems – monitoring, disinfection methods and effective anti-film strategies
  • adhesion of microorganisms and cell lines to abiotic and biotic surfaces
  • cyto- and genotoxicity mechanisms in environmental tests and the search for natural detoxification methods
  • protective activity of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics (antigenotoxic, antioxidant, proapoptotic and antiproliferative to cell lines)
  • renewable energy sources
  • production of biogas, biomethane and hydrogen from waste and biomass of plant, animal and municipal origin
  • agricultural, municipal and industrial biogas plants
  • biogas purification by bioconversion
  • pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials from the agri-food and related industries
  • biological and chemical methods of wastewater treatment (from various industries)
  • aerobic and anaerobic stabilization of municipal sewage sludge
  • utilization microalgae biomass for treatment of wastewater and post-fermentation effluent
  • waste and post-digestion biomass management
  • biological methods for deodorization of animal breeding rooms
